- The best Sumatran coffees are polarizing. The unique varieties, terroir, and processing methods combine to produce boldly aromatic coffees that are earthy and woodsy and herbal. Traditionally, this has been the coffee I’d take with me on a camping trip, complementing the forest fragrances all around. Sumatran coffee is delicous brewed in a French press, adding to its already-silky mouthfeel. This one is from the Aceh (ah-chay) province of Sumatra, a regional blend produced by many small farmers, brought in by our friend Brian Phillips at Anthem Coffee Imports in Kansas City. We use this in our Ambergris Espresso blend to give it a big bass note and balance out the sweet, fruity aromatics on the top end. (Photo courtesy of Brian Phillips at Anthem.)
