- I remember years ago I met a guy named Tim Schilling, who was an ag professor at Texas A&M. Tim spent time in Rwanda after the civil war and genocide had destroyed farms, leaving widows to pick up the pieces. He helped build a number of washing stations to get production back on track. I’ve long enjoyed Rwandan coffees, always Boubon variety and always washed. But time brings change, and Schilling’s staid foundation continues to evolve. This is the first natural I’ve ever roasted from Rwanda. The Mwito washing station, on the shore of Lake Kivu, was built in 2008 and purchased nine years later by Arkansas-based Rwanda Trading Company. This infusion of capital has allowed area farmers to enroll in classes to improve quality, reduce costs, and innovate. This is the result. (Photo courtesy of Balzac Brothers.)
