- I met Luz Helena Salazar in the town of Armenia in the state of Quindio, Colombia, not far from Maracay. Her sons, Felipe and Carlos started exporting the family coffee to Australia after seeing how coffee shops were flourishing. As the pandemic began to limit imports, they expanded their market to the United States. A couple of years ago, Felipe sat in my office talking to me about his coffee. He left me with a couple of samples and it was enough for me to keep that conversation open and eventually visit Quindio a year later. Though we have a long and deep history with Colombian coffee, most of our recent stand-outs have been from Luz’s farm, Maracay. This is a honey processed Caturra. The cherries were pulped and then fermented for 3 days before drying on raised beds for 11 more.
