- It’s back, and better than ever. If you loved Rio Negro, and so many of you did, this is an interesting twist on that old standard. It’s a micro-lot of the same coffee, but turned on its head. This lot was dried with the fruit intact instead of stripping the fruit prior to drying, so we’re calling it “Nio Regro.” This land was originally planted with coffee trees in 1955 by a Chinese immigrant, who managed the farm for the next 36 years. In 2001, Rio Negro became the first Rainforest Alliance Certified farm in Costa Rica, and in 2006 it was acquired by La Minita. I visited Rio Negro three years later, when La Minita was still under the control of Bill McAlpin, a man staunchly against naturals. So it wasn’t until he sold to the Japanese tea company, Ito En, that things started to get weird. Pairs well with ramen noodles. (Photos by me: some of the many children on the farm, and a waterfall on Rio Negro - the river itself)
