Finca Montelin is owned by a young man named Juan Ramon Diaz. His friends call him “Formal” because he’s a serious guy. Among the small group of coffee producers I’ve become friends with in Nueva Segovia, Juan is the most dependable and meticulous, providing us excellent coffees the past couple of years. I was in Nicaragua recently, and after walking around Juan’s “Ojo de Agua” farm, we stood in the back of the truck as his little brother (Formalito) drove the dirt roads through thick, shaded rows of coffee trees. He talked to me about pruning and replacing trees with new varieties, and explained how farm maintenance effects production. He’s adeptly used his ag degree, combined with the traditions of excellence passed down from his father, and it comes through in the cup.
