Costa Rica Rio Negro

  • Located in the borderlands with Panama, Hacienda Rio Negro sits at a lower elevation than its sister farm, La Minita, and the cup profile reflects this distinction with a lot more earthy, base notes in the aromatics. My last visit to Rio Negro was highlighted by a lively horseback ride through the forest to see the waterfall on the river for which the farm was named. Rio Negro comprises equal parts coffee plantation and forest preserve, and has been Rainforest Alliance certified since 2001. Adjacent to Rio Negro, Parque Nacional La Amistad stretches out over 485,000 acres, the largest forest-protected area in the country, and it extends into Panama with more than 500,000 protected acres. As you can imagine, this is a beautiful area, and you can taste it.
