Colombia Verdun

  • I was sitting in the cab of my friend Jaime Abel’s truck as he drove around the small town of Concordia asking if there are any farms in the area still growing coffee of the Caturra variety. Caturra is the Pinot Noir of coffee and one of my favorites. A variety that was all but abandoned during the coffee leaf rust blight of 2013. Leave it to a woman like Maria Elena Garcés to continue cultivating such a difficult coffee. I met Maria Elena at the horse stables on her farm, Finca Verdun. She showed me around the farmhouse and plantations and I could see that she is a tough, diligent, and respected Doña. Those exceptional characteristics are evidenced in this brawny coffee.
