India Devon Estate

  • Indian coffees have always been somewhat of a mystery. Many of the same hybrids that are grown in Latin America were hybridized on the other side of the world independently, and with different names. This Avanthi is unique to Devon Estate, a cross between BBTC (essentially a Catimor) and Caturra. Devon is perched high up on Merthi Mountain, where Asian elephants quietly wander the wooded slopes. The farm is owned by Roshin Varghese, who is an elegant woman growing coffee in a picturesqe landscape. During my trip to her farm, Roshin had a delicous lunch waiting out on the lawn of her cottage when we returned from the coffee plantation; a storybook memory that keeps this coffee close to my heart.
