La Minita Los Piños

  • Bill McAlpin would’ve never allowed this. The stodgy, preeminent godfather of single-estate coffees brought La Minita to the US in the 1980s, creating a whole new genre in the specialty coffee sector. But McAlpin had a method. He had a blend of varieties and a recipe for picking coffee and processing coffee that was unwavering. The idea of changing that formula would’ve been unfathomable. But he sold the farm in 2014 and all bets were off. This coffee, 100% Caturra, is a micro-lot that brings some clarity to the terroir of the farm. Of the people who pick the coffee and the workers who ferment and sort the coffee. Because, as McAlpin’s friend and first customer, George Howell says, “Blends hide the farmer.”
