Costa Rica Miramonte Honey

  • Hacienda Miramonte is an old farm that was started by a woman named Lucila in 1917. Today it is owned and managed by her great-grandson, Ricardo, who runs the family farm with the same diligence and care as his ancestor. Riding around the farm with Ricardo in his 90s-era Land Rover, he tells me about their experiments with micro-lots and the way he prunes and picks the coffee trees. This particular lot is very interesting because it is a new variety called Centroamericano, which is a cross between the Sarchimor and Rume Sudan, known for its excellent cup profile. It’s a high-yielding variety that is disease-resistant and also tastes great, so everybody wins. The honey process lends a bit of sweetness and hints of fruit to this excellent coffee.
