- El Chele, Nicaraguan slang for “white guy,” is a farm owned by a young fair-skinned farmer named Norman. He’s the one in the group who everyone picks on, but he’s good-natured and hard-working. I met him in Nueva Segovia, but he lives in Jinotega, which is a two hour drive and well-known for las chelas. Norman’s coffees are good, a collection of Caturra and Catuai naturals and anaerobic naturals. Tasting them for the first time on the cupping table in Ocotal, it was obvious that a lot of care was taken in each one’s preparation. This lot, labeled “6344” is soft on the palate with clean, slightly earthy, fruit-like aromatics. These new Nicaraguans truly are a new type of coffee, adding a dimension to our offerings that wasn’t available until now.
