DoubleShot times they are a'changin
The DoubleShot Duathlon is finally over. It was a success by my standards. You can read all about it and see many photos at DoubleShotDuathlon.com
New happenings here at coffee central. Looks like New Guy (famous blues man Robert Johnson) has what it takes to stick it out here at DoubleShot. He's our new barista- so far he seems a little wordy and not quite angry enough, but hopefully I'll rub off on him. :)
Jason (chief surfer dude) is pulling shots on his last day here on the 12th of October. He's off to travel the world again- Hello India.
Josh has found a new calling and decided to move on to greener pastures, putting in day number "last" on Saturday Oct7.
We're hoping Jared will step up to the portafilter and take on more responsibility. Jared looks like a barista, and I hope he becomes what we need him to be.
We're still looking for one more person to fill the white flip-flops of Josh and Jason. Apply within.
On another front, I have taken my first steps into the future of DSCC. I'm pretty excited about it, because I know that where we're headed is the future of the coffee industry. I recently became a member of the Cup of Excellence. Cup of Excellence is a program in which cuppers go to various countries in Central and South America, farmers from all over the country bring in their best lot of coffee, and they are rated to find the very best coffees in the region. Once they are rated and samples are sent to members, there is a one-day online auction in which I can bid on a lot, and hope to come away with a new, extraordinary coffee. The best parts of this program are that I have the opportunity to buy a new coffee that is unique and delicious, the farmers are rewarded for producing exceptional coffees, and the farmers also become known to the world and renowned for their coffees- providing opportunity for roasters like me to begin a relationship with the farmer and buy that farmers coffee directly from him. Giving the farmer his due.
No B.S. about "fair" certifications with no oversight and false price floors disrupting the market. No marketing crap that supposedly benefits the workers. It's direct buying. The organization takes only 10% of the sale. And I get the entire lot.
I love it. Will keep you posted.
It's Colombian coffee, and the auction is October 26.
